Wood Screenroom

Recently, a Burr Ridge family approached us to build a screen room off their kitchen. They sought an appealing open-air space where they could eat and relax on pleasant days while still enjoying protection from the elements.

In response, we built them a room from the foundation up, using pre-engineered, insulated roofing and quality materials throughout. In addition to providing superior durability, this approach gives them the future flexibility to convert the space into a full room addition, should their needs change, by simply adding storm windows.

For the floor, we used ipe wood, a dark, attractive and extraordinarily resilient hardwood from South America. Also called “Brazilian walnut” or “ironwood,” it is extremely resistant to rot, insects and fire and can last more than 100 years without preservatives. This makes it a good choice for applications requiring weather-resistant flooring, including decks and screen rooms. For added visual appeal, we included an inlay on the floor using wood tile made of garapa, a lighter-colored hardwood also renowned for its durability.

To further enhance the outdoor experience, we installed a skylight in the roof. Next to it, we built in a stylish ceiling fan to help keep the screen room cool on warmer days. We then surrounded the room with columns constructed of posts wrapped in cedar and painted white for a classic look.

Given that the room faced the backyard — and the yards of nearby neighbors — the family opted for the addition of a handrail that skirts the exterior of the room. This provides some added privacy, while still allowing them to retain a good view of the outdoors.

For pleasing light in the evening hours, we included crown molding a few inches below the top of the roof interior and outfitted it with upward-facing LED lights. The use of this long-lasting lighting, and our installation of durable materials throughout, will enable the client to enjoy the screen room for many years to come with virtually no maintenance.

As a result, the family can now take advantage of a cool, attractive room just steps from their kitchen where they can eat meals, relax and entertain friends — all while basking in the air, sights and sounds of the outdoors.
